About The National Merit Scholarship Program
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
Approximately, 16,000 students are notified that they have qualified as a Semifinalist in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. To be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition. Finalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered next spring. Semifinalists will be notified in February 2022 if they are selected as Finalists.
More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
